However, it can be far easier than you expect if you read the right requirements. Below are some tips on crossing over country borders while driving your rental car—things you must know to avoid surprise delays or, even worse, being denied access to cross the border:
You will need to have a valid passport with at least three blank pages in order to cross into another country. East African residents who possess the East African passport may not require a visa to travel around neighbouring countries. Visa requirements for some African countries have also been eased. However, foreign residents can still book the East African Tourist Visa (at $100), which allows them to travel around East Africa to Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya with a single visa. Traveling with an emergency travel document other than a valid passport or a national identity card (ID) will save you from surprise delays on your trip or vacation. You can check the country-specific visa requirements and ensure to make the visa application no less than 4 weeks before your travel date.
A valid international driver’s license or national driver’s permit is critical not only for gaining border entry into another country but also for driving in the country should you be stopped by a roadblock. A local driver’s license, which is applicable to the East African Community, is also usually recognized if you already have one.
You will need to present a certified copy of your vehicle registration or license papers at the border station to allow you to cross over with a rental car.
